Kemu San (Subject Three) 科目三

China's unstoppable viral line dance.

Origins & History

Guangxi origins

The meme traces to Guangxi wedding banquet performances, where guests would spontaneously break into a flamboyant routine to liven up the celebration. Two origin stories circulate: one credits a Guangxi wedding guest (identified by Chinese media as Zhu Kaihong) whose improvised dance at a friend’s reception was widely imitated; the other links the name to driving-test folklore — a test-taker danced for joy after passing the road test (Subject Three of the Chinese driving exam). A third popular explanation claims every Guangxi native faces three life subjects: singing folk songs, slurping rice noodles, and dancing.

Short-video explosion

In late 2023 the routine — arm waves, hip sways and a signature leg-kick finale — flooded Douyin. It merged with the ‘One Word, Go’ (一笑江湖) DJ remix and became China’s defining viral dance of 2023–2024.

Going global

The trend jumped to TikTok, where creators worldwide filmed ‘Subject Three’ versions. Skaters, flight attendants and even Michelin chefs performed it, making it one of the first Chinese-originated line dances with global reach.

Move Breakdown

  • Shoulder Roll + Hand Flow: Smooth alternating shoulder rolls with hands flowing in front of the chest.
  • Hip Sway Combo: Rhythmic side-to-side hip movement with arms raised in a ‘Faye Wong mic’ pose.
  • Leg Kick Finale: The climax: alternating high leg kicks while pumping the arms — the clip’s money shot.
  • Douyin Arm Swirl: Wrist-led circular arm movements borrowed from DJ-performer gestures.

Music Profile

The canonical track is the DJ remix of 一笑江湖 (‘One Word, Go’). Any 120–128 BPM Chinese pop remix with a strong 4/4 beat works; the leg-kick section usually lands on the drop.

Fashion & Visual Identity

Deliberately unglamorous: rolled-up sleeves, loose shirts, anything that swings with the hips. The joke is performing it in formal wear — suits at weddings are the classic setting.
