Memphis Jookin 孟菲斯滑步舞

Tennessee's gliding street ballet on the buck.

Origins & History

Buck and the gangsta walk

Jookin descends from the ‘gangsta walking’ era of late-80s Memphis club culture, danced to the local ‘buck’ sound — a raw, aggressive Memphis rap style (Three 6 Mafia’s predecessors).

Gangsta Walking era

Through the 90s the dance matured in Memphis neighborhoods and talent shows, defined by smooth glides, footwork on the toes, and dramatic pantomime.

Modern renaissance

Dancers like Lil Buck carried jookin to global stages — from street cyphers to performing with Madonna and ballet companies. A new generation keeps the Memphis scene alive.

Move Breakdown

  • Glide: Seemingly frictionless sliding across the floor on the balls of the feet.
  • Buck: Stomping, chest-out attitude steps — the dance’s namesake energy.
  • Toe Work: Intricate footwork balanced entirely on the toes.
  • Pantomime: Storytelling mime segments — pulling ropes, flicking switches — between footwork runs.

Music Profile

Memphis buck tracks and modern trap-soul hybrids, usually 85–100 BPM with heavy 808s. The dance glides on the hi-hats and hits on the 808.

Fashion & Visual Identity

Memphis street style: crisp tees, fitted jeans or track pants, and spotless sneakers — footwork shows demand clean shoes.
