Breaking 霹雳舞
The original b-boy art, now an Olympic sport.
Origins & History
Block party birth
Breaking emerged in the Bronx alongside hip-hop’s other elements in the early 1970s. DJ Kool Herc’s ‘merry-go-round’ break sections gave dancers their window — the ‘break’.
Hollywood and global spread
Films like Wild Style, Style Wars and Breakin’ (1984) exported breaking worldwide. South Korea, Japan, France and Russia built dominant scenes by the 2000s.
Olympic recognition
Breaking debuted as an Olympic sport at Paris 2024, with battles judged on technique, creativity and musicality — cementing its status as the most institutionalized street dance.
Move Breakdown
- Toprock: Standing footwork performed before going down — the dancer’s handshake.
- Footwork: Floor patterns spun on hands and feet: 6-step, 3-step, CCs.
- Freezes: Positional stops (airchair, baby freeze, hollowback) that punctuate rounds.
- Power Moves: Momentum tricks: windmills, flares, headspins, airflares.
Music Profile
Classic breaks (Apache, It’s Just Begun, Funky Drummer) around 110–130 BPM. Battles use DJ-set breaks with clear ‘b-boy beats’ — heavy drums and long instrumental sections.
Fashion & Visual Identity
Sneakers with flat grip soles, track pants or sweats, tees and caps; crews often wear matching colors. Function rules: knees and elbows take the floor.
